“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

Psalm 18:2 ESV

Psalm 18 is written by David, and expresses his deep gratitude for the many works God had done in his own life. This Psalm is actually identical to 2 Samuel 22 where similar themes are being portrayed. One of those themes, in both texts, is described using the words “rock”, “fortress”, “refuge”, “shield”, and “stronghold”. Each of those words conveys that God is our defense. God is your defense.

The Greek phalanx, for comparison, was a defense that was extremely impenetrable. Numerous soldiers would gather their shields together to form a wall essentially, in order to defend their battalion from all incoming attacks. A defense is anything that protects one thing from another thing. Whether that be an attack, or through a court case. Similarly, this is how God operates within the lives of believers. He, through Jesus, Himself, and His Spirit, all operate as a shield to guard us from every harm. Jesus’ death on the cross is our defense because sin was paid for through the shedding of His own blood (Matthew 26:28 ESV). The Holy Spirit provides a defense for any affliction that may happen to believers on this planet (Matthew 10:20 ESV). God serves as our defense in every scenario.

Judgement Day will come, and on that day God will judge each person accordingly. As followers of Jesus, we can rest knowing that Jesus serves as our defense on that day. Jesus advocates for us (1 John 2:1 ESV).  He is on our side and ready to support His followers, even when we sin and fall short of His glory.

God loves us, and loves us so much so as to provide a defense for His followers in every way. He is our everlasting shield, our indestructible fortress, our imperishable refuge, our infinite stronghold against all strife on this earth. Are you anxious? God is your defense. Are you fearful? God is your defense. Are you suffering? God is your defense. Are you struggling? God is your defense. Turn to Him, and know that He will receive You into His amazing grace, into His Kingdom, into His joy, into His peace.

  • How can you trust God daily to be your defense?
  • What does it look like to know God is always there for you?
  • Have you accepted the truth that God cares for you?
